- As previously mentioned, Council 94 has filed a lawsuit to fight the recent pension benefit changes. Feel free to read the full complaint.
- Joe Antonio informed the executive board of the date for the summer outing. This year, our field day at Alton Jones will be on Thursday, August 26.
- If you are under 35 years old, and would like to participate in the Council 94 Next Wave committee, please contact me or leave a comment to this post. The Council is actively searching for younger members to get involved, and this is a great way to do so. Even if you aren’t under 35, please tell fellow union members who are about this new way to make their voice heard.

Happy holiday season to all our members in Local 2881 (and their families, of course)! As you probably know, Local 2881 is having a holiday party this year on December 14. It will be held at Ralph’s Kitchen (at the Kelley Gazzaro VFW Post, map) from 4:30pm until whenever the party ends. Tickets are on sale, so see Greg Baribault, Lou Maccarone, or Carmino Paliotta. We’re charging a $10 deposit, essentially. When you come to the party, we give you your $10 back.
Also, we have a new trustee on the Local 2881 Executive board. It is Brian Harrington of CRMC, serving the 2009-2012 term. Congratulations and welcome!

In my last post, I mentioned that there would be a special meeting on July 30. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, that meeting will not be happening. The executive board will keep you posted about the special summer meeting.
Second, Union Outing tickets will be available by the end of the week. If you haven’t seen the flyer, view it here: Union Outing 2009.
Finally, Brother Joe Carola sends along the following softball team update.
Wednesday, July 8
The RIDEM/Local 2881 softball team endured its worse loss of the season Wednesday vs. KPMG Tax Compliance Center. KPMG jumped out quick and went on to an 18-4 victory. Top offensive performances essentially came from the other dugout on this night. One of the bright spots for RIDEM was their leadoff hitter, Alex Pinto, who went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored. RIDEM’s record is now 6-2 and they will look to regroup next Thursday at 6 p.m. vs. Disanto, Priest & Co.
Thursday, July 16
The RIDEM/Local 2881 softball team bounced back with a come from behind 11-7 victory over Disanto, Priest & Co. Alex Pinto again led the way with a 3 for 3 night and two more runs scored. Alex is batting .929 over his last 4 games. After a shaky first inning, solid pitching from the father/son combo of Bruce and Ryan Ahern was backed with some inspired defense. RIDEM entered the sixth inning down 7-4 and scored 4 runs to take the lead, never looking back. RIDEM is now 7-2, second place in their division. Next up for RIDEM is a doubleheader on Wednesday 7/22 starting at 7:15 p.m. The first game will be vs. Woodard & Curran and the second will be vs. Deltoro Killer Bees.

Hello brothers and sisters,
The Local 2881 Executive Board wanted to update you on a few things we’ve been working on. First, there will be an emergency meeting on Thursday, July 30 in the 3rd floor cafeteria at 235 Promenade St. At this meeting we should have some new information on the Council’s action to fight the recent pension plan changes in the signed budget. According to Council, there is a meeting scheduled for tomorrow (July 15) among the legal staffs of the unions affected by those pension changes.
Also, we have scheduled our Local 2881 Summer Outing! It is going to be held at the W. Alton Jones Campus of URI (directions). We’re going to have a barbeque, and there will opportunities for swimming, kayaking/canoeing, horseshoes, bocce, volleyball and maybe even a high-low-jack tournament. It is recommended that you bring bug repellent and sunscreen. Tickets will be $5 for members and $10 for guests, with children under 16 free. For more information, contact Lou Maccarone or Mike Umbriano. Tickets will be available shortly.
